What Local Problems We Solve

ProMaster technician servicing a built-in refrigerator column

Arizona heat pushes garage fridges past their limit. When a garage or casita fridge sits in 110°F+ summer heat, the compressor runs nonstop just to keep up. We see early compressor failures out here that would rarely happen in a cooler climate.

Monsoon power surges fry control boards. A single storm-related surge can silently kill a fridge's control board while everything else looks fine. If your fridge died right after a storm, that's usually the first thing we check.

Hard water clogs ice makers and water lines. Valley water leaves mineral buildup inside ice maker valves and water lines. It's one of the most common reasons an otherwise healthy fridge stops making ice.

Snowbird homes come back to dead seals and stuck ice makers. A fridge left mostly empty for months develops dried-out door seals and frozen-solid ice makers. We get a lot of these calls every fall when seasonal residents return.

Luxury built-in columns need a different kind of repair. Scottsdale and North Phoenix kitchens increasingly run Sub-Zero and Thermador built-in columns instead of standard fridges. These need brazing and refrigerant work most general handymen aren't equipped for.

Older homes, newer fridges, mismatched power. A lot of Phoenix-metro homes built decades ago have outlets and circuits that weren't designed for today's higher-draw refrigerators. We catch this mismatch more than people expect.

Your Fridge Just Died: What to Do With Your Food

If your fridge stops cooling, food safety is a race against the clock. Here's the FDA's guidance:

  • Refrigerated food stays safely cold for about 4 hours if the door stays closed.
  • A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours unopened, 24 hours if it's only half full.
  • Keep the door shut as much as possible. Every time it opens, cold air escapes.
  • If perishable food has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours, the FDA recommends throwing it out rather than risking it.

General food safety guidance from the FDA and USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. When in doubt, use a thermometer.

What's That Error Code Mean?

A quick reference while you wait for us. Codes vary by model year, so tell us yours when you call and we'll look it up before we arrive.

Samsung
  • 22 C / 22 EUsually a defrost sensor or ice maker fan communication fault, not necessarily the compressor.
  • OF or 88Not an error. This is demo/showroom mode. It's easy to trigger by accident and easy to turn back off.
LG
  • Er FF / FFA freezer fan or sensor fault.
  • Er CO / COA communication error between the control board and the display panel.
Whirlpool, Maytag & KitchenAid
  • Flashing POUsually just means the unit lost power at some point. Resetting the display often clears it, it's not always a repair issue.
  • Repeating temp alarmUsually points to a door seal or sensor problem rather than the compressor.
GE
  • Chime + flashing displayUsually flags a temperature deviation or a door left ajar, rather than a specific numeric code.
Sub-Zero
  • Panel alarm lightTypically indicates a temperature deviation or a recent power interruption.

Repair or Replace?

Here's the truth most people don't hear: almost every refrigerator problem is repairable, and repair almost always costs a fraction of replacement. Age alone is not a reason to replace, older appliances were often built simpler and sturdier than today's models, which makes them very repairable. We fix 15- and 20-year-old units every week.

Usually Worth Repairing

  • Almost any single-component failure: seals, sensors, fans, valves, thermostats, ice makers, defrost systems, control boards, even compressors
  • Your fridge has served you well and you like it? Age alone isn't a reason to give it up
  • Older units are often simpler, sturdier builds with widely available parts
  • Repair is typically a fraction of a comparable new unit's cost, and you skip delivery, installation, haul-away fees, and the lottery of a new unit's build quality

When Replacement Makes Sense

  • You've never liked this unit, bad layout, too loud, wrong size, and this breakdown is your excuse to upgrade
  • It has broken down repeatedly: 3+ separate failures in the last year. At that point it's telling you something
  • Parts for your model have been discontinued and can't be sourced
  • You're remodeling the kitchen anyway and want a different size or style

Either way, you'll get our straight recommendation on-site, with the repair quote in hand, so you're deciding with real numbers, not guesses.
